What do you think of my budget.?

Resolved Question

What do you think of my budget.?

tax
everybody should come under the paye system,
which would mean that £100,000 a week football players or company excecutives would
pay about £40,000 weekly and only claim back at the end of the year like the rest of us
there will be a special inheritance tax of 50% on anyone who dies leaving £5million plus
this will help to narrow the ever increasing difference between rich and poor
nat insurance
the upper limit would be abolished
share dividends there would be no exceptions for people owning shares bought
on the london stock exchange not to pay the tax on them
motor vehicles
for anyone not having tax and insurance longer than one month the vehicle wil be
crushed and there will be a minimum £1000 fine rising according to your income.
As it is not fair that a working person who commits a speeding or parking offence is
often fined more than a quarter of his weekly salary, then based on that percentage
all fines for any minor criminal offence should be according to income.
this would bring in about £30billion per year, and also give the government an
interest free loan of £40billion per year.
I commend this budget to the people of britain

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

dont know about crushing cars just for one month witrhout tax. Some of your ideas seem reasonable. Has the upper limit for ni not been abolished already, not sure. However 50% tax for those earning more than 150k is coming in and that would seem to go some way to achieving that aim. Unlikely your IHT plans will be implemented as all governments can do is talk about reducing IHT not increasing it anyway its 40% already I believe.

  • Excellent plan in principle, but just wait to see the exodus to the Netherlands, Jersey or other places where there would be less tax to pay. There are many enticing tax havens just waiting to welcome new clients.

A way to earn money quickly?

Although you technically have to be 18 they don't check this too closely on eBay in my experience, just bump up the year of birth. If you feel uncomfortable with doing this, you could just get a parent of someone over 18 to do it for you.

Can I pay in advance for my gas & electric?

Resolved Question

Can I pay in advance for my gas & electric?

Hiya
Im with Scottish Power & pay quarterly just wondered if I pay more than my bill is would it take it off my next bill or would they try to refund me?
Thanks

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

if you pay more they will roll it over to your next bill so you will always be in credit. they will not refund you!

I have budget payment cards for my gas and a key for electric so i never owe electric but with my gas i pay £15 a week and then i know my bill will be covered and i always have some in credit

  • I am in the US, but every time I have overpaid any of my utility bills, they applied the extra a a credit on my next bill. I don't see why it would be different in the UK. You can always ask Scottish power. I suspect there is a phone number on the bill for this type of question.
  • My old Mum had cards for her electric and gas, she paid money on them through her post office. I'm not sure how it works (she was not on a prepayment meter) and when she died they gave me her money back.
Try asking at the post office.
  • Manage your own money, don't trust a utility CO. to manage your money for you.

  • No it would just put you in credit and come off the next bill, if your not sure why not give them a call or email and see.
  • on 2 your next bill, no problem

Halifax refusing to accept debt repayment plan saying they are not willing to help with large amount?

Resolved Question

Halifax refusing to accept debt repayment plan saying they are not willing to help with large amount?

i have a debt of £15,700 with the halifax since august 2009 i have called numerous times to negotiate a repayment plan but they wont accept, unless i pay a substantial amount first, they want to pass it on to debt collectors.
what can i do to avoid debt collectors?
i do want to clear debt but with an amount i can afford i.e £200 monthly

Additional Details

i did offer up to £600 with no luck.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

well if u can offer to pay £600 why not pay it off of the debt in the first instance? even if u had a loan of £15,700 the monthly repayments would only be around £300/£400 anyway.....

i cant see why they are not accepting your repayment offer?
just wait for them to get debt collectors on to you and then make the offer tot hem, keep back the money u were willing to repay them each month, then by the time u have any contact with a collection company u will be able to pay off a lump sum in one go.

if your still not happy contact the cccs or cab for help

  • Would £200 per month even cover the interest on £15,700? Unless you've got an interest rate of just over 1% (which I doubt), the debt will just keep getting bigger so I can understand why they would not find that acceptable. Even if the debt was frozen, with NO interest accruing, it would take you six and half years to pay it off, provided you can keep up the payments.

I am sorry you find yourself in this situation but I don't think, from what little we know, that the Halifax is being unreasonable. Sometimes, we have no choices and have to take the consequences, grit our teeth and be determined never to get ourselves into that situation again. Hope you find a way through it.

Could I become a millionaire by buying and selling domain names?

Resolved Question

Could I become a millionaire by buying and selling domain names?

I am 18 years old and I'm looking for a business I could do until I turn 21, and I think that domain name buying and selling could be the answer to make a business out of what little money I have. What I'd like to know is, is it possible to become a millionaire out of doing this?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Maybe if you know what you are doing. I doubt it though.

Other Answers (2)

  • Yes, but it's hard work! I actually wrote a blog post about this method of making money (see below for the link). You can make a few hundred dollars with each domain name by doing this, and it'll greatly increase your chances of making a sale. The less effort you make it look like the buyer will have to do, the better.

Keep it up consistently for three years and you *could* become a millionaire. That's about $333,333 a year. You'd have to make about $28,000 a month, so if you list domain names for $200, you'd have to sell 140 each month. If you list them for $800, you'd have to sell 35 each month. You see my point... increase what you're offering and the quality of your product, you can increase the price, and decrease the amount of work you'll have to do to get that first million. :)

    Source(s):

  • Sure, if you find out the name of the next big corporation or product and buy the domain before they get to it. Otherwise, probably not.

Most childrens accounts that come with a cash card are for children aged 11 years and over, but there are a few accounts that are for younger children.

Some of the best ones include:

NatWest - Young Saver
Nationwide BS - Smart
Abbey - Flexible Saver for Kids
Bradford & Bingley - Flexible Saver for Kids
Britannia - Firstsaver

  • Yes honey you can open a smart account at Nationwide Building Society.
A smart account has a restriction of £100 cash withdrawal per day. However with a smart account you can have either a passbook or card and pin number and use it as a first time bank account.

You will need 2 forms of ID to open the account. If you are customers of Nationwide, you will just need your childs birth certificate, however if you are not, you wll need id for yourself and his birth certificate!

Nationwide are fab - would reccomend them to anyone!

    Hope this helps

Ive looked at it and turned it down. The risk is too high for the reward. Thats my personal view. There is no guarantee that you will get your investment back, you could loose the lot. Can you asses the true credit worthiness of the people you loan to? I cant.
The reward 8%. I can get that sort of yield on a corporate bond fund plus a capital gain of 26% over the last 9 months (OK that was a bonus).
well i only put £100 in to the game so i can see how it will end up. I have a lot more to invest but i'm not sure where to invest apart from ISA and a Regular saving .

Can anyone define: assets, liabilities, expenses and capital?

Resolved Question

Can anyone define: assets, liabilities, expenses and capital?

in simple english please. tried googling, but don't really understand some of the definitions, and would also like to hear what other people think. thanks!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Assets relate to all property, goods, staff, stock etc held by a company. They have a monetary value, either the cost paid, wage paid or resale value.

Liabilities include money you owe, tax you have to pay

Expenses include all items not already covered under Assets. These might be travel/petrol costs, meals, expenses claimed by staff

Capital is the amount of money invested into a company, ie share capital, It also covers savings, this is not related to cash flow in any way.

Cash flow is the amount of money you have coming into your company, the money that can be drawn upon to pay your staff or creditors, when purchasing stock, you increase you assets, when paying staff you increase your assets

Hope this helps, I am not an expert and accountancy is like some weird other world to me, but I run my own company so I have had to glean some knowledge.

Can I get a morgage for £40,000?

Resolved Question

Can I get a morgage for £40,000?

I'd like to buy a houseboat, I've seen a few in this price range.

Also, I earn 21,000 a year here in the UK. Would I also be able to get a morgage for £150,000? Without a deposit?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

No.

Other Answers (3)

  • For a mortgage of £150,000 you will currently need a deposit of approx £15,000 to £30,000 meaning you would then be borrowing £120,000 to £135,000. As your income is £21,000 you have no hope of borrowing that amount on your own.

In addition, those figures are based on mortgaging a house rather than a houseboat. You will find far fewer lenders willing to lend for the purchase of a house boat and their rates and criteria will probably be even stricter.

Sorry, but I think that this is a non starter unless you have a sizeable chunk to put down now.
  • You will get the mortgage easily, but you will need atleast a 10% deposit.
  • deposit required

Help. I'm really overdrawn!!?

Resolved Question

Help. I'm really overdrawn!!?

Please can you give me tips or advice on how to crawl out of the overdraft mess I've got myself in to?
I'm 25, live at home with my mum and pay a generously small amount of rent. I got myself in deep back in May on a trip to Rome where I had no access to internet banking and couldn't keep an eye on my funds.

If you've managed to get yourself back in the black. Please tell me how you did it as I'm going to have to extend my overdraft again just to get through till payday next week.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

The first thing to do would be to speak to the bank concerned. Make an appointment with them and explain the situation. They may be able to offer a way to repay the debt a manageable sum at a time so you have something to live on, but are clearing the debt.

If you can avoid extending the overdraft it would be best as its not really solving the problem. Also, if you have extended it recently the bank is unlikely to want to extend it further. Someone else suggested switching accounts, but in the current climate if you are over any agreed overdraft it will be difficult to open another account.

Try and set yourself a budget each month, that way you can see how much you have left after all bill are paid. If you have unwanted items then by selling them you could make additional money that could go towards repaying the debt.

  • Open a current account with another bank. Incidentally they might offer you an overdraft too.

Then each month, pay off a set amount of your old overdraft (that is affordable for you) until it's cleared.

This is what I'm currently doing.

It's important your new current account is with a different bank. If you opened another account with the same bank, they can (and it's legal) AUTOMATICALLY move money between those two accounts to pay the other off. They never used to, but since the recession some banks have been doing this.

It would be worth checking what date your account is due it's 'review of overdraft'. If the bank see you've been using your overdraft every month, or worse, going over your overdraft limit, be aware they have the right to demand the full amount back straight away... so it's best to pre-empt them.
  • I was in a similar position , the only way I got out of it is by selling things on ebay buiding the total up in paypal and then transfering it to my bank account hen I had enough to clear the overdraft - what you have never had you never miss
  • There is a very simple answer that we all KNOW, but don't want to admit. Go work more until you get a good emergency fund established.

I did similar stupid things, and had a 2nd job till I was out of debt and had a rainy day fund set up.

Also, quit taking trips when you are broke! ;-)
  • Cut all expenses and consider selling stuff. Consider asking someone to help bail you out. It might be better to owe a close friend or family member money than a bank or creditor, but it's still money owed no matter what. Don't do anything stupid, there are no shortcuts.
  • Hi i know this sounds crazy, but become an ebay wholeseller. Get info on this link http://www.salehoo.com/secrets/?hop=01225 just copy/paste it.
It helped for me to get out of mine, now i'm making £1000 extra a week!
Great stuff just need the right info out there but it works.
    Good luck :)
  • you gotta cut back on EVERYTHING just for this month so that you dont borrow any more. Stop spending right now, limit your food spend, travel expenses (walk!) and no uncessary nights out! you can do it chick

Looking to open a Child Trust Fund savings account?

Resolved Question

Looking to open a Child Trust Fund savings account?

My fiance and I are looking for a place to open up our daughter's Trust Fund to put her £250 voucher in but we want to use a SAVINGS account, not a shared or stakeholder one. Thing is though, we can't find one anywhere! Does anyone have a savings account for their Child Trust Fund, and if so, where? Did you get anything for using them such as vouchers? (Most stakeholder ones offer some kind-of vouchers, but not sure about any savings account ones) and do you know their interest rate?

Our daughter is 4 months old on 22nd Sept, so we need one soon! Any advice or info you could give us is much appreciated! x

Every major bank has one!! Try Abbey. Go to Abbey.com Click "Savings and Investments" on the top row and then "Savings for children" on the left.

  • Check http://www.moneysupermarket.com/savings/ and choose the option for Children's Savings.
  • What you are after is a Cash Child Trust Fund, which is only offered currently by 13 providers. None of the big banks offer such an account at the moment so you would need to go to a building society.

The highest rate at the moment is from Hanley and Economics BS, which is paying 5.00pc, while Yorkshire BS is paying 3.00%. The link below will show you all the best deals.

    http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/money/saving…

While stakeholder or equity based CTFs do have the potential for bigger returns they are linked to the stockmarket. If when the bond matures the stockmarket has fallen you could get back less than you paid in. Cash CTFs have rates that move with base rate, they are not risky investments. With base rate unlikely to fall any lower, rates will increase when base rate does.

Wrong pin code/ card declined at cashpoint?

Resolved Question

Wrong pin code/ card declined at cashpoint?

i recently got a new pin code and bank card and today before college i tried to lift money out but i forgot the code. i tried 3 times. When i got home from college i went to the nearest post office and tried again with the correct pin code. it let me in to the choice screen but then wouldn't let me do anything else? The guy at the post office said my card has been declined.

so basically is it because i tried 3 times with the wrong number so i need to wait 24 hours or will i need to go to the bank tomorrow before college?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

For security reasons, if you enter the wrong PIN three times, the card is usually blocked. You will have to contact the Bank; probably a new PIN will be sent to your registered address.

There are currently no comments for this question.

Other Answers (2)

  • I think if you had tried another ATM your card would have been swallowed, most banks operate a three strikes policy, and that's not even 3 consecutive goes but 3 times total. You will probably have to convince your bank that you are still in possession of the card and it was simply a case of you forgetting your new PIN. Don't try anymore ATM's as most banks put a pair of scissors through any cards swallowed by their machines, then they return them to the issuing bank!
  • You need to contact the bank and they will re-issue you a new pin and possibly a new card.

How much does a foster carer get paid in the UK?

Resolved Question

How much does a foster carer get paid in the UK?

Appreciate your help.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

i believe it is about £90 per week for each child. I looked into fostering for a while. You also get an allowance to pay the child weekly pocket money, depending on the age of the child, plus extra payments for the childs birthday, at christmas, and a summer holiday payment. Obviously to provide the children with nice presents and a holiday and the usual extra's. It's not hugely profitable when you take into account the expenses of looking after the child/children, but i would imagine it to be highly rewarding and it is doing a great thing. I am not sure if your working family tax credit can go up for each child or if you can claim the child benefit for them if you are fostering. Good luck. Social services run courses for people considering this which will be very helpful to you.

Is there really a government scheme to get loans cancelled or is it a scam?

Resolved Question

Is there really a government scheme to get loans cancelled or is it a scam?

People keep ringing me and saying they can get my loans/credit card debts cancelled. So far I haven't responded, but is there really a government scheme and how much do you have to owe?

We have a credit card debt for about 800 pounds. Could we get some of that written off because we are on a low income and if so what's the best way to go about it?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

The "scheme" does exist and is legal, however the private companies dealing with it are not too hot on morals & ethics! It isn't a scheme as such - someone has realised that many loans etc were "mis-sold" and therefore unenforceable. So if you took out a loan between certain dates then there is a chance that you may not have to pay it back, In order to qualify then you would need to speak to one of these companies and see what they have to say and how much they want for parting with their information. Personally, I'd rather pay the loan than give these people money.
If you have a recent loan that you are struggling to pay then either write to the company involved and make an offer of payment and ask for the interest to be frozen, or speak to citizens advice. Don't get involved with these vultures.

There are currently no comments for this question.

Other Answers (5)

  • It's not a scam as such but the only way (that I'm aware of) to get credit cards and loans "cancelled" is to be declared bankrupt and I suspect that the companies phoning you will be actually approaching it from that position. Obviously this is something you really don't want to do as it will destroy your credit record and make it very difficult to get credit/loan/mortgage in the future.

Avoid them at all costs. Keep paying the credit card company off as much as you can per month and don't spend any more on the card. It might take time but it's worth it. When it's all paid off, cancel the card and don't get another one - they're all not worth it.

You could phone the Citizens Advice Bureau for additional help and they will know more about it and be able to advise better.

Using switch online to pay for goods.?

Resolved Question

Using switch online to pay for goods.?

If i order from a company online and use switch then they take the amount from my account, can they then go back in and take a lump sum that they aren't entitled to?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

It's possible but it would be illegal because they didn't have your consent. If a rogue company were to do this you could just take it up with your bank, point out they weren't allowed and you'd get it back. The bank would then look to the company for proof and if it turns out you did approve that transaction the bank would recall the money they'd given you back.

Resolved Question

Im 14, how can i earn money?!?!?

heyah :)
im 14, 15 in november.
i really want a part time job or something to earn a bit of money.
I don't want to do a paper-Round, Plus my my mom doesn't like the idea of me going round the streets on my own.
I have rung round a few local hairdressers in my area to see if they needed extra help, but non of them did, (especially with it being a credit crunch and all)

So have any of you got any more idea of what i could do ???

ASAP please (:

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

You could be an assistant at a shop? A little corner shop or something. You could also sometimes help with the till. You might get a low pay though! Another one is babysitting but if your mum dosen't allow you to go around streets maybe she wont let you go around people's houses so I would stick with the first one unless you know the person your babysitting. Good Luck. x

SO thats one idea. Another is always babysitting. There is always someone looking for siters.

Another idea is seeing any small stores you have down town. I live in a small town so I don't have many options, but you could have a store that hires young.

    Basically just ask around.

Debt collection place cooerced me into agreeing to pay more than i can afford?

Resolved Question

Debt collection place cooerced me into agreeing to pay more than i can afford?

I need some advice please because im really scared. I have an overdraft debt of just under £3000 with Barclays Bank, because I haven't paid it they have sent it to a debt collection place called Call serve. I arranged to pay them £40 a month in July but then forgot to call and pay with my card. I rang them back today and now have agreed to send them £80 immediately and then £50 a month by direct debit – but I cant afford this, the woman on the phone wouldn't accept less than this and said with my wages I could pay it, but she wouldn't take into account that I have to pay a lot of money to travel to work and I have other debts. She kept putting me on hold and then just talking over me. She just kept talking and talking and saying she was trying to help me and was trying to stop bailiffs coming. Ive called the Citizens Advice bureau but they cant see me fro two weeks and I don't have any money at all to pay the £80 upfront. Im too scared to call them back because the woman was quite mean. And don't know what to do now? Can someone help?

Don't call them, it's generally practise for debt collection agencies to use scare tactics over the phone. They know very few people will record them so can get away with it. Only ever deal with these people by letter, first off write a letter of complaint about the women you spoke to. Stating that she was aggressive rude and threatened you. State that you want a response to the complaint by letter only, if no response is offered you will take the matter further. Have two copies, one to send to them recorded mail the other for you to keep.

Next letter you need to inform them that you only wish to deal with them by letter and they should stop all calls to your house/mobile/work. Any calls made after the receipt of the letter will be taken as harassment and you will take the matter further. Again 2 copies, one to them send recorded mail the other you keep.

Next letter should state that you cannot afford (enclose a copy of your outgoings and incomings) the amount they state you must pay a month and can only offer them £X a month. If they do not accept the amount then you will cease all payments until you have seeked legal advice. Again 2 copies, one to them recorded, one for you. Legally as long as you offer to pay an amount that you can afford they have to accept it. Many threaten CCJs or bailiffs but both have to be brought to court and warranted by a judge. A judge will not issue a CCJ or bailiffs if you made an attempt to pay and they refused (why you must keep all letters that you send and you receive from them). A debt collection company knows this and as soon as you mention legal advice they will step down. They know they would lose the court case and they would be out of pocket.

Such websites as moneysavingexpert will give you the basic format to any letters you need to send. And debtline are over the phone charity who can help you work out a budget so you know your sending each creditor a relaistic repayment that still allows you to live. Never let debts take over your income, even if it means lowering some repayments. You have better success of getting these debts paid off it they don't become a monthly battle, allow yourself some of your wages that don't go to paying off debts.

  • Go here then download & print the letter. Send it to the debt company & keep a couple of copies for yourself. I'd do this today if you can.

As for baliffs, they can't send them until it has been to court, you've been given a ccj & youve defaulted on payments
  • how in the world did you overdraw your account by 3000???
  • I'd suggest ring them back and say you will pay what you can, then do it. If you are put on hold, or if you feel you are not being listened to, just put down the phone. Keep all receipts of money paid to them as proof that you have paid. Go and talk to Citizens Advice as soon as you can, but take things into your own hands first. You don't have to accept rudeness from anyone.

If you can live more simply and spend less, it will free up more to repay your various debts. Target the one costing you the highest interest first. Every £1 more each week will make a cumulative big difference.

Last week I shopped at my supermarket at 8pm when reduced-to-clear prices were reduced for the last time. I spent €21.71 and got enough food for 2 weeks, and this week's share is still in the freezer. I will only need to get bread or milk as required. And I am drinking more water from the tap, and less tea / coffee / milk / other drinks. I bring a packed lunch to work. If you can do something similar and reduce your shopping bill, your debts will melt even faster.

If you are a young adult who goes out on the town every weekend, look out for free or nearly free things to do, or have friends round to your place instead of going out, at least some weekends. Could be to share a meal, watch DVDs, play cards or scrabble, have a music jamming session or lots more. If you have a few friends coming over and everyone brings something to share, it makes a fun evening at minimal cost.

    Good luck !!!

What is the minimum a UK cash machine will give out in one transaction?

Resolved Question

What is the minimum a UK cash machine will give out in one transaction?

Just wondering. Asked around and no-one seems to know! What is the minimum? £5? £10? £20?

Someone did say you have the option to say how much you want, as long as it has a 5 or 0 on the end, eg. £35, £90

Thanks in advance, Jamie.

Most cash machines will only give £10 or £20 notes making the minimum withdrawal £10.

Multiples of £5 used to be common but I've not seen it for some years now. Perhaps because of this there seems to be a shortage of £5 notes in the UK. I'm fed up of being told "Sorry, I've got no fivers" as I'm handed a pile of £1 coins. :(

I predict a £5 coin soon.

[edit] Indeed there is a £5 coin but it's a commemorative piece not intended for general circulation. A £5 coin to replace the £5 note isn't far off.

  • In most machines the minimum is £10 and then in multiples of 10.
Some machines (although very few) will start at £20 and then in multiples of 10.
The most you can take out in one day is either £300 or £350 depending on which bank you use.
    Never in multiples of £5.00.
  • Very few cash machines give out £5 notes. I haven't seen one in London in years.

There definitely does seem to be a short supply of £5 notes these days, until a few months ago I used to work in a shop and £5 notes were like gold dust!
  • minimum is £10 and i haven't seen any in £5 so i guess they don't do it. just go into the back and draw it out that way you can get your £5
  • You can get £5 notes from a few cashpoints. They're mainly in areas where the banks think people will want to take out less money. They're most frequently found near universities or student populations.
  • £10
